Lunar Reverie
Made in response to the theme of winter moonlight for an open call. As a collector of found objects and photographs, I stumbled upon a vintage photo depicting a couple in winter attire gazing at the horizon through binoculars, photo that became the seed of inspiration for this piece.
The photograph is delicately enhanced by adding a tiny glass rhinestone to mimic a distant full moon on the horizon. This simple yet poignant alteration infuses the image with a sense of enchantment. The photo is then resized to fit within a found tin, aged and weathered by the passage of time. This tin, with its high walls, becomes a key component of the artwork, playing a dual role as both a container and a canvas. The tin's reflective interior surfaces magically capture and amplify the images and the ambient light, lending the piece an ethereal and ever-changing quality.
The magic of the tin is that it doesn't merely frame the photograph but it also creates the illusion of looking through binoculars itself. This subtle metamorphosis within the tin alludes to the concept of images within images, resembling natural fractals. This effect evokes a sense of voyeurism, encouraging the viewer to connect with the couple in the photograph who, at some point in time, also gazed upon a distant horizon.
